Mods are user generated modifications to games. Gods and kings adds quite a bit, but is still fairly approachable, i think. It's a pretty good game on it's own, and a really good entry point if you haven't played a ton of strategy games. There's a good bit of DLC for that, so getting everything requires a bit of effort. I think you can get the complete edition for pretty cheap if it's on a steam sale (daily/flash/community choice). That is arguably the best civ game out there as long as you have beyond the sword. I noticed you mentioned getting civ 4 elsewhere in this thread. If you go for civ, you'll want all the expansions. You don't have to worry about the enemies attacking you while you're doing something else. That way you get to take your time and plan out your moves. Age of Empires is real-time, so managing units and buildings can get rather hectic if you're not used to fast-ish paced games.Ĭiv is turn based, so you go, then the AIs go, then you go again, etc. If you've never really played games before Civ is the way to go.
